” Diving in Kunlun “ Reinterpreting Light, Water, Nature, and the Future
Like a hidden stream descending from the mythical Mount Kunlun, it channels the radiance of the universe and the whisper of nature as it winds through space. Here, light dances with shadow, water murmurs in gentle reverie, and all beings thrive in quiet serenity. Taking water as its path and light as its rhythm, this design inscribes Eastern philosophy into architecture—a place where the depth of Chinese civilization meets the industrial soul of 798, unfolding a poetic dialogue between light, water, nature, and the future.

Concept Generation
From“ Commentary on the Waterways Classic” to “Diving in Kunlun”
Water serves as the fundamental carrier of both human civilization and life itself, its significance extending far beyond daily utility. As recorded in the “Commentary on the Waterways Classic”: “The Yellow River originates from Kunlun, flowing underground for thirteen thousand li before emerging at Jishi Mountain to enter the human realm.” This hydrological principle of “descending from heights, flowing concealed, and reemerging” embodies Eastern civilization’s profound understanding of water’s role in the cyclical dynamics of heaven and earth. Drawing inspiration from this ancient wisdom, C.R.LIN adopts “Submerged Kunlun” as his core concept, reinterpreting the intrinsic relationship between water, humanity, and nature through architectural and spatial narrative. This exploration traces a journey from the origins of civilization to the possibilities of future living.
In classical Eastern cosmology, Kunlun is not merely a geographical symbol but a spiritual representation of the cosmic order and the origin of civilization. The concept of “Diving Kunlun” transcends literal geographical references, returning to the spirit of “harmony between heaven and humanity” that has been passed down through the “Commentary on the Waterways Classic” and Chinese civilization. It interprets Kunlun as the primordial state and intrinsic law from which civilization emerges.
The design integrates the mythological relationship between water and life with KOHLER’s century-long spirit of exploration, envisioning the space as a dynamic process where water nurtures all things—a continuous cycle that flows from outside to inside, from above to below. This constructs a complete narrative of “Heaven (sunlight) Earth (water, nature) Humanity (future),” forming a four-tiered experiential hierarchy of “Light — Water — Nature — Beyond the Future.” Through a multi-sensory spatial experience, it interprets the artistic conception of Chinese water civilization, creating an immersive journey that evolves from the unity of heaven and humanity to the boundless realm of fearless innovation.

Water Ripples Permeating Industrial Memory
While preserving the original architectural character and retaining the iconic red brick texture of 798, the facade is clad in flowing stainless steel abstracted water ripples. Rather than imitating specific rivers, this design metaphorically represents the continuous evolution of civilization, much like the enduring flow of water. The lightness of the stainless steel engages in a dialogue with the solidity of the red brick, creating shimmering dynamics under light and shadow. This interprets the Eastern philosophy that “Water embodies harmony, and adaptation lies within oneself.”
The water ripple facade and the vertical spiral structure that connects heaven and earth within the interior form an isomorphic relationship between inside and outside. This spiral functions like an axis linking heaven and earth, metaphorically representing the continuous flow of energy and the cyclical nature of civilization. Together, they construct a three-dimensional, fluid spatial narrative, translating the imagery of Kunlun’s water “flowing concealed underground” from the “Commentary on the Waterways Classic” into a contemporary architectural language. This guides visitors from the outside in, tracing the current upstream to explore the spiritual source.
